Law enforcement authorities have concluded a criminal investigation into the construction of fortifications in Russia’s Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine. Rustem Zainullin, who serves as both Deputy Governor and Minister of Property and Land Relations for the region, has been formally accused of bribery and large-scale embezzlement.
First Deputy Prosecutor General Anatoly Razinkin has approved the indictment in the case. The charges against Zainullin are now set to be promptly referred to court for substantive review.
This development follows earlier reports that the Russian Prosecutor General’s Office had sought to recover nearly 1 billion rubles from individuals involved in the fortification project, including Zainullin, citing the alleged misappropriation of allocated funds.
