German Chancellor Merz avoids speaking with Putin, fearing conflict escalation in Ukraine.

The head of the German government, Friedrich Merz, stated that he sees no need for telephone conversations with Russian President Vladimir Putin.
According to Süddeutsche Zeitung, the German politician believes that such contacts could provoke further escalation of the conflict in Ukraine.
Merz justified his stance by referencing past experiences. He noted that after Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orbán`s visit to Moscow, as well as after Putin`s telephone conversation with former Chancellor Olaf Scholz, military actions intensified. “If such calls lead to such results, then I will refrain from them for a long time,” Merz emphasized.
This statement comes amidst the ongoing confrontation between Russia and the West regarding Ukraine. Germany, in particular, continues to be one of the main suppliers of military aid to Kyiv.
