After a somewhat hesitant start to the summer season, Moscow is preparing for a significant shift in its weather pattern. Forecasters are predicting the imminent arrival of a substantial heatwave, bringing temperatures well above seasonal norms.
The coming week is expected to be notably warm across the Moscow region. By the middle of the week, temperatures in the capital are projected to climb dramatically, potentially reaching highs of +35°C.
This surge in heat is significant, and experts suggest that the temperatures could even challenge records for this time of year, some of which have stood for nearly three decades. Compounding the daytime heat, night-time temperatures, particularly in the city center, are expected to remain high, possibly not dropping below +20°C, offering limited relief.
The transition into this hot period will begin with warm conditions on Monday, around +26-28°C, featuring ample sunshine and a moderate south-westerly wind. Tuesday may see the development of isolated short showers or thunderstorms in localized areas, including parts of Moscow, as temperatures continue to rise to +27-29°C. Gusty winds are also possible during this transition.
However, from Wednesday onwards, the forecast indicates a period of dry, intense heat. Temperatures are expected to settle into a range of +29°C to +34°C. Certain areas in the broader Moscow region could experience even higher readings, potentially between +34°C and +36°C, especially later in the week. The wind is generally expected to be light and southerly, calming further towards the end of the working week.
Looking ahead to the subsequent weekend, a slight moderation in temperature is anticipated, with forecasts suggesting a return to a still very warm +25°C to +28°C.
Residents are advised to take necessary precautions to cope with the heat, such as staying hydrated and seeking shade during the hottest parts of the day, as Moscow enters this period of intense summer weather.
