Moscow’s public transportation network, including buses, electric buses, and trams, is fully prepared for the summer season. The Department of Transport and Road Infrastructure Development of Moscow confirmed that extensive preparations have been completed.
Specialists from Mosgortrans operational sites and Moscow Metro depots conducted seasonal maintenance on over 7,000 buses and electric buses, as well as more than 550 trams. According to Nikolai Asaul, General Director of Mosgortrans, the entire fleet has transitioned to its summer operating mode, which will remain in effect until the autumn cold.
Within the buses and electric buses, climate control systems were tested, and filters were cleaned and replaced. Refrigerant was also replenished to ensure a cool environment for passengers during hot weather. Nikolai Asaul added, “We checked the airtightness of all rubber seals on doors, windows, and hatches to enhance the efficiency of the climate control system and passenger comfort inside the cabin.”
He further explained that the climate control units operate automatically, maintaining an optimal cabin temperature of +21 degrees Celsius. This adheres to the Russian Ministry of Transport’s standards, which specify a range between +12 and +25 degrees Celsius.
All electric buses meet high safety and service standards and are serviced at 12 Mosgortrans facilities. Similar air conditioning system maintenance was carried out on Moscow’s trams, which operate on 36 routes, including the Moscow Tram Diameters (T1 and T2).
In addition to vehicle maintenance, all drivers have completed their mandatory annual training, focusing on operating in the city’s changing road conditions.
Maxim Likshutov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow for Transport and Industry, stated, “Today, the capital’s ground public transport serves over 780 routes, so we are committed to ensuring it remains comfortable and safe for passengers year-round, as instructed by Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin. Buses, electric buses, and trams have fully transitioned to their summer operating mode, which will last until autumn and the first cold snaps.”
Metro’s Summer Preparations
The Moscow Metro is also undergoing preparations for the summer. Specialists are thoroughly cleaning all surfaces in the lobbies and platforms of over 290 metro and MCC stations, including columns. Additionally, staff are wiping windows and stained glass for improved light transmission, washing outdoor station entrances and lobbies, and inspecting air conditioning systems in stations and trains.
Specifically, before the warm season, station ventilation systems are switched to their summer mode. This ensures air is refreshed up to five times per hour, maintaining comfortable conditions for passengers even during the hottest weather.
