Moscow’s unique communal fleet, a vital service of the City Services Complex, is actively preparing for the upcoming summer navigation season. According to Petr Biryukov, Deputy Mayor of Moscow, extensive work is underway to ready the 30 vessels responsible for maintaining the cleanliness of the Moskva River and the navigable sections of the Yauza River.
Currently, the entire fleet is undergoing thorough inspections and scheduled technical maintenance. This includes replacing consumables, diagnosing key components, mechanisms, and equipment, as well as checking fuel systems and steering columns. Inter-navigation repairs are set to conclude by April, after which all vessels will undergo sea trials to ensure their operational readiness.
As part of the preparation, four garbage collection vessels will receive upgraded control systems and power units to enhance their maneuverability and power. Three floating cranes will be equipped with modern grapples and more powerful engines.
The communal fleet plays a crucial role in keeping the capital’s waterways clean. Last season, the vessels collected over 530 tons of waste and extracted approximately 4,000 tons of sand and soil. This efficient operation ensures 24/7 surveillance and maintenance of the Moskva River and Yauza within the Moscow Ring Road (MKAD).
In addition to fleet readiness, the City Services Complex is also conducting a large-scale spring cleaning effort across the city, which includes washing and repairing over 13,300 ventilation shafts of collectors to ensure overall urban cleanliness.
