Every year on April 7th, Orthodox believers celebrate the great feast of the Annunciation of the Most Holy Theotokos. In folk tradition, this day has long been considered a significant turning point, symbolizing the definitive transition from winter to spring.
According to ancient legends, on this day the Mother of God herself descends from heaven to sow the earthly fields, while Archangel Gabriel guides a plow drawn by a white horse, assisting her in scattering the seeds of all grains.
It was believed that washing one’s face with meltwater, well water, river water, or spring water at dawn on Annunciation could cleanse a person of all illnesses and ailments. Furthermore, one of the recognizable symbols of the holiday was the baking of lark figures, which were then distributed as treats.
