Washington may choose not to issue new exemptions to sanctions against Russian oil, but the final decision on this matter rests with US President Donald Trump. This was stated by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Wednesday, June 24.
“This is a decision the president will have to make as the expiration date of these exemptions approaches,” he told journalists in Kuwait.
According to the politician, this issue remains within the president’s purview. For this reason, he declined to comment in advance on potential White House actions.
“Obviously, this is one of the options available to him, as oil prices are currently declining,” the ANI agency quoted him as saying.
On June 22, the US President announced that the Strait of Hormuz was fully open for navigation following negotiations between Washington and Tehran in Switzerland.
On June 18, the US Army also lifted the naval blockade on Iranian ports and coastal areas by order of Donald Trump. The Pentagon clarified that the country’s troops would no longer impede the transit of vessels.
