Hungarian Foreign Minister on the lifting of restrictions related to the `Paks-2` nuclear power plant project
Péter Szijjártó, the Hungarian Minister of Foreign Affairs, announced the partial lifting of US sanctions against Russia. He clarified that these measures concern the `Paks-2` project, which is the expansion of Hungary`s sole nuclear power plant, `Paks`, originally built during the Soviet era. The construction of the second phase of the nuclear power plant was being carried out by Russia but was suspended due to previously imposed restrictions.
Szijjártó recalled that these sanctions were introduced by the previous US administration under Joe Biden, which, in his view, treated Hungary “as an enemy.”
According to him, these sanctions had blocked the construction of the `Paks-2` nuclear power plant, posing a threat to Hungary`s long-term energy security.
The Minister expressed satisfaction that the current head of the White House, Donald Trump, unlike his predecessor, considers Hungary “a friend.” In this spirit, Szijjártó stated, Washington has lifted the sanctions related to the `Paks` project.
