In a world increasingly accustomed to the fleeting nature of digital interactions, the enduring legacy of a true chess grandmaster found its vibrant expression in Prague. The inaugural Vlastimil Hort Rapid Chess Memorial Tournament, held at the venerable Hotel Don Giovanni, wasn`t merely a competition; it was a profound testament to a titan whose moves transcended the chessboard.
A Legend Remembered: Vlastimil Hort`s Unforgettable Impact
Vlastimil Hort, a name synonymous with strategic brilliance and an amiable spirit, was a luminary of Czechoslovakian and international chess. His career, marked by six national championships, a formidable presence on the global stage – including a peak world ranking of 6 in 1977 and a decisive victory over Lev Polugayevsky in the legendary 1970 “Rest of the World vs. USSR” match – established him as a player of exceptional caliber. Yet, beyond the accolades, Hort was cherished as a “popular storyteller,” a personality whose charm extended far beyond the 64 squares.
It is this multifaceted legacy that the Czech Inn Hotel Group, with profound respect, sought to honor. The choice of the Hotel Don Giovanni, a favorite haunt of the Grandmaster himself, lent an undeniable personal resonance to the event. One could almost imagine Hort, with a twinkle in his eye, observing the proceedings from a quiet corner, perhaps musing on the swiftness of modern rapid play.

A Gathering of Generations: Honouring a Family Man and Chess Maestro
The solemnity and significance of the memorial were underscored by the presence of Hort’s beloved wife, Brigitte Hort, and his son, Daniel Hort. Brigitte, visibly moved by the outpouring of respect, delivered an emotional opening speech, sharing glimpses of their “37 wonderful years” together. Her gratitude to the 95 players and numerous guests who gathered to honor her husband was palpable, transforming the tournament into an intimate family reunion for the wider chess community.
This unique atmosphere, a blend of respectful remembrance and competitive fervor, was a hallmark of the day. While Vlastimil Hort himself was known for a depth of play that could stretch the boundaries of time, the inaugural memorial in his name embraced the swift dance of rapid chess – a curious paradox, perhaps, but one that perfectly captured the dynamic spirit of a man who always moved with the times, even while shaping them.
The Battle on the Board: FM Gustav Brejník Claims Victory
The tournament, a 7-round rapid chess affair with a time control of 2×15 minutes plus 10 seconds per move, saw a diverse field of 95 players vying for the coveted title. From seasoned International Masters to promising young talents, the boards at Hotel Don Giovanni were alight with tactical skirmishes and strategic duels.
After a day of intense mental combat, it was FM Gustav Brejník who emerged victorious, securing first place with an impressive 6.5 points. He was closely followed by IM Pavel Čech, who claimed second with 6 points, and Pavel Postupa, taking third with 5.5 points.
Brigitte Hort personally presented the cash prizes, adding another layer of heartfelt connection to the award ceremony. Beyond the overall champions, recognition was also given to the best players across various categories: IM Josef Přibyl dominated the over-70s, Miroslav Muroň led the over-60s, WIM Olena Žemličková shone as the best female player, and Boris Pogorelsky proudly won the under-15s category. In a touching gesture, over thirty players also received a copy of Vlastimil Hort`s insightful book, My Chess Stories, ensuring his voice continues to resonate.

A New Tradition: Cementing a Timeless Legacy
The resounding success of this first memorial tournament sends a clear message: Vlastimil Hort is far from forgotten. His contributions to chess, his vivacious personality, and his enduring spirit continue to inspire. The organizers, led by Jaroslav Svoboda, owner of Czech Inn Hotels, have firmly committed to making this an annual tradition, to be held every year on the last Sunday in September.
“We have no doubt that it will be a success, both at home and abroad. Vlastimil would be proud of us,” Svoboda stated, encapsulating the sentiment of an entire community.
This tournament isn`t just about remembering a great player; it`s about fostering the game he loved, nurturing new talent, and ensuring that the strategic beauty and profound human connection of chess continue to thrive in Prague and beyond, all under the banner of one of its most charismatic champions. Vlastimil Hort`s legacy, it seems, has found its permanent home on the calendar, ensuring that his checkmate on the hearts of chess enthusiasts will endure for generations.
