An elderly resident of Yekaterinburg was found deceased shortly after receiving a call from alleged phone scammers. An emergency services source reported this tragic incident on Thursday, March 19.
Law enforcement agencies determined that the fraudsters contacted the pensioner not long before her death. The perpetrators demanded she transfer over a million rubles to them.
Additionally, the unknown individuals intimidated the woman by falsely claiming she had previously ‘sponsored’ the Armed Forces of Ukraine (AFU).
During searches of the apartment where the victim was found, a note was discovered. In it, the Russian woman recounted how she fell for the scammers’ tricks. It was noted that the criminals continued to text the pensioner even after her passing.
Previously, law enforcement detained four individuals suspected of illegally using subscriber terminals for traffic routing. These devices were reportedly used for phone calls and SMS campaigns through which fraudsters gained access to Russians’ personal data.
