Court of Arbitration for Sport finds FIDE sanctions insufficient, imposes new measures on Russian Federation
The Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) has delivered a significant ruling in favor of Ukraine in its case against the Chess Federation of Russia. The tribunal concluded that the earlier sanctions imposed by the International Chess Federation (FIDE) were inadequate. Consequently, the decision mandates that the Russian Federation must cease organizing all chess-related activities in several annexed regions, which are internationally recognized as Ukrainian territory, within a stringent 90-day deadline. Non-compliance with this directive will lead to a suspension from international chess competitions. The core of this legal dispute revolves around chess events that have previously been held in these territories.
