Vigevano (IRCCS San Raffaele) at Fukuoka International Congress on Rare Epilepsies: "A Global Patient Approach is Needed"
Professor Federico Vigevano, Director of the Department of Developmental Disabilities and Developmental Age at IRCCS San Raffaele, recently served as a distinguished speaker at "The 10th Azalea Festival Symposium." This significant international congress, held from March 27 to 29, 2026, at the Fukuoka University Hospital in Japan, was dedicated to "The Molecular Pathomechanisms and Therapeutic Strategies of Rare and Intractable Epilepsies."
The high-profile scientific event brought together leading specialists from various countries, including Japan, South Korea, Taiwan, the United States, Australia, and India. The discussions focused on developmental encephalopathies linked to epilepsy and explored the most advanced therapeutic strategies for rare and complex forms of the condition. Notably, among the limited European experts invited were Professor Vigevano and Professor Nicola Specchio, his former student, who now leads the Epilepsy and Movement Disorders Neurology Unit at the Bambino Gesù Pediatric Hospital.
During the symposium, Professor Vigevano presented on "The holistic approach to Rare and intractable epilepsies." He highlighted to the international scientific community the increasing importance of a clinical strategy that extends beyond mere control of epileptic seizures. Professor Vigevano stressed the critical necessity of a "global patient approach," which comprehensively addresses the full spectrum of vulnerabilities and complexities associated with the most severe forms of epilepsy.
"It is fundamental to manage these patients holistically, evaluating all comorbidities and not just the epilepsy," explained the neurologist. This perspective promotes a holistic, multidisciplinary care model that integrates neurology, neuropsychiatry, rehabilitation, and the management of complex assistance needs. Professor Vigevano underscored that this comprehensive approach is a defining characteristic of the clinical and scientific endeavors at IRCCS San Raffaele, particularly in the fields of rare diseases, neurodevelopmental disabilities, and drug-resistant epilepsies. His participation in such a prominent international congress affirms the authoritative global recognition of his work and reinforces IRCCS San Raffaele's standing as a premier reference center for the care of complex patients suffering from rare neurological conditions in developmental age and neurodevelopmental disorders.
