Folk Calendar: What to Drink on March 30 for Strength and Health

July 11, 2026Diego Herrera1 мин

On March 30, believers honor Saint Alexius, who was born into a distinguished Roman family in the late 4th century. His parents were devout Christians renowned for their compassion and assistance to the poor and disadvantaged.

This day was traditionally associated with significant snowmelt. Folk sayings highlighted this natural phenomenon, such as: "As the streams flow on Alexius' Day, so will be the flood," and "Alexius – from every snowdrift, pour out a pitcher."

It was customary to drink a honey-birch brew (vzdvar) on this particular day. This beverage was widely believed to bestow strength and good health, effectively warding off all maladies. Ancient traditions held that this special brew possessed the power to banish any illness.

Weather Omens:

  • If snow or rain falls on March 30, a bountiful summer harvest is anticipated.
  • A clear sky on this day, however, suggests a hot summer with poor yields of mushrooms and berries.
  • Should the day be warm, it is believed that the entire spring season will follow suit, remaining similarly mild.
