Russian Woman Rescued from Myanmar Scam Call Center Departs for Moscow
A Russian citizen, recently freed from a fraudulent call center in Myanmar, departed for Moscow on April 8 via an Aeroflot flight from Bangkok. The woman's flight took off from Suvarnabhumi Airport.
She was accompanied by Russian diplomats and immigration police officials throughout her journey. The flight took off at 10:15 local time (06:15 Moscow time).
The Russian national declined to comment to journalists regarding her ordeal or journey.
Her liberation, which became public on March 10, was the result of joint efforts by Russian and Myanmar authorities. She had been abducted in the border region between Myanmar and Thailand after being lured by promises of a high-paying job in Thailand, only to find herself trapped in forced labor.
In a related development, reports from late February indicated the arrest of a Russian man in Thailand. He is accused of orchestrating a scheme to lure citizens from CIS countries into similar forced labor conditions within Myanmar's call centers. He faces up to five years in prison if convicted.
