Savvin Day, March 29th: Unraveling the Future Through Cart Wheel Squeaks in Folk Tradition

On March 29th, Orthodox Christians commemorate Saint Savin of Hermopolis, who suffered for his faith in the 3rd century. As governor of Hermopolis, he, along with his followers, was tragically thrown into the Nile for refusing to renounce Christianity. In folk tradition, this significant date is widely known as Savvin Day.

Historically, March 29th was also referred to as Cart Day (Telezny Den), marking the period when villagers traditionally began preparing their carts for the upcoming spring planting season. This foresight ensured they wouldn't be caught unprepared when the busy agricultural season arrived. A unique divination tradition was observed on this day: people would harness a horse to a cart and ride through the village, carefully listening to the distinct squeak of the wheels. It was believed that each creaking wheel foretold a specific future event:

  • If the front right wheel squeaked, it indicated forthcoming financial prosperity.
  • A squeaking front left wheel pointed to potential health issues.
  • A creaking rear left wheel warned of impending debts.
  • And a squeaking rear right wheel promised overall good fortune in all endeavors.

Weather Omens on Savvin Day:

  • Warm weather on Savvin Day predicted a similarly warm and pleasant spring.
  • If clouds were seen moving swiftly and high in the sky, it suggested fair weather ahead.
  • The river's water level was also a significant indicator: a low level signaled a poor harvest year, while a high level foretold a wet summer.
