Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) agents have arrested a US Department of Energy employee. The charges allege an attempt to provide material support to the 'Ansar Allah' movement in northern Yemen, known as the Houthis. The US has designated this group a terrorist organization.

Ashton Hamed Ellaboudy, 51, a resident of Richland, Washington, was taken into custody. The charges state he attempted to provide material support or resources to the Houthis, an entity classified as a foreign terrorist organization.

Authorities became aware of the suspect following a trip to the Middle East. He had documented this travel as sick leave through his employer. Court documents indicate the suspect purchased components for drones and improvised explosive devices. He also intended to offer his professional engineering expertise to the Houthis in Yemen.

A hearing to determine pre-trial detention is scheduled for Friday in the federal court in Richland.

If convicted, Ellaboudy faces a maximum prison sentence of 20 years.
