UK Considers New Sanctions on Iran Over Airbase Incident

Britain may impose further sanctions on Iran, suggesting a possible connection between Tehran and an incident at the Fairford airbase, according to the Telegraph, referencing UK Defence Secretary Wes Streeting.

Iran's state broadcaster previously reported that the Iranian Ministry of Foreign Affairs summoned British Ambassador Hugo Shorter. This action followed London's statements regarding Tehran's alleged involvement in an incident near the base involving American aircraft in Britain.

"The government may consider further sanctions against Tehran," the newspaper quoted Streeting as saying.

Streeting stated that the UK "will consider what a proportionate response should be" once "concrete conclusions are drawn." He noted that the investigation is ongoing.

On September 27, British police reported a "major incident" near RAF Fairford. Five UK citizens were arrested on suspicion of involvement in terrorist activities and explosive offenses; they were released on bail Monday. On Thursday, a man with dual Iranian-British citizenship was detained.

Fairford is the only airbase in Europe used by American strategic bombers, which have flown missions to Iraq and Yugoslavia from there. In March, British authorities permitted the US to use the base for operations against Iran. Britain asserts that American aircraft may only use the base for defensive operations. Previously, protests against United States aggression occurred near the base.
