EU Council President Calls Canada a Like-Minded Partner
Charles Michel, President of the European Council, described Canada as a like-minded partner in trade. He confirmed plans for a summit in Canada this October.
Last week, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen announced work would begin on granting Canada the status of an associate member of the European Union.
"We are like-minded partners. We have very strong trade relations. We share the same values," Michel stated at UN headquarters.
Michel noted the EU's desire to strengthen ties with Ottawa and confirmed the upcoming summit in Canada for October.
The Wall Street Journal previously reported that Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, amidst stalled trade talks with the US, proposed Canada become an associate member of the EU. Trudeau later clarified this referred not to membership, but to forming a "unique alliance."
