Judicial proceedings have begun in France for over 1,800 people involved in widespread high school student protests, the French Ministry of Justice reported Monday.

Since the start of the violent demonstrations, 5,060 individuals have been detained. Of these, 87% were minors (4,406 people) and 13% were adults (654 people). Currently, legal proceedings are underway for 1,802 individuals: 319 adults and 1,483 minors, according to the ministry's statement.

An additional 790 cases were dismissed without further prosecution.

High school students in France have been protesting for two weeks against overloaded schedules, teacher shortages, and other educational problems. Some of these demonstrations have led to unrest, with the French government estimating that the school protests have escalated into street riots.
