Ulyanov: EU Misleads Citizens Blaming Russia for Gas Supply Halt
Vienna, September 16 - RIA Novosti. European officials are intentionally misleading their populations by claiming Russia has halted gas supplies to Europe, stated Russia's Permanent Representative to International Organizations in Vienna, Mikhail Ulyanov.
Earlier, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen accused Russia of cutting off gas supplies to Europe in her speech.
"In the rhetoric and minds of EU officials, everything is upside down. Do they genuinely believe Russia stopped gas supplies to Europe, or are they deliberately misleading the population? The latter seems more probable," Ulyanov wrote on his X (formerly Twitter) page.
RIA Novosti previously reported, citing Eurostat data, that liquefied natural gas (LNG) supplies from Russia to the European Union in July of this year amounted to 606.6 million euros, a 25% decrease from the previous month and a 12% decrease year-on-year.
In January, the Council of the EU approved a regulation for a phased ban on Russian LNG and pipeline gas imports. The ban on LNG imports under short-term contracts takes effect on April 25, 2026, and under long-term contracts on January 1, 2027. The ban on pipeline gas imports will commence on June 17, 2026, for short-term contracts and on November 1, 2027, for long-term contracts.
